Welcome MSW Intern, Claire!

We’re thrilled to welcome Claire to the Sojourner team! She will be with us throughout the academic year, gaining hands-on experience in advocacy, community outreach, and direct service to survivors of domestic violence.

To help you get to know her better, we asked Claire a few questions about what inspired her to pursue social work, what she’s most looking forward to this year, and what she hopes to learn during her time at Sojourner.

What school/program are you currently in?

I am currently at Augsburg University pursuing a Master of Social Work, specializing in anti-oppressive clinical practice. 

What inspired you to intern at Sojourner?

I really connected with their mission to empower survivors of domestic violence to reclaim their autonomy and safety. I am also interested in learning more about the intersection of criminal justice and social work, and I found Sojourner's legal advocacy department particularly intriguing. 

What background or experience do you bring to the role?

Through many years of hospitality experience, I have honed my verbal and non-verbal communication skills in high-pressure environments. My academic background in sociology prepared me to approach this work with compassion and understand domestic violence within the broader context of society. 

What have you enjoyed or learned so far during your time at Sojourner? Any experiences or stories that stand out?

The team at Sojourner has been so kind and welcoming; it is clear to me that this is a nurturing environment for clients and staff alike. I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity to take part in such meaningful and rewarding work.

How do you hope to apply this experience in the future?

During my time at Sojourner, I will gain experience in legal advocacy, community outreach, and direct client support. I believe this well-rounded internship will be applicable across multiple areas of social work practice!
