When someone shares that they’ve experienced sexual violence, you don’t need the “right” words—what matters most is being there for them.
Survivors often worry they won’t be believed or will be blamed. A supportive response can help them feel less alone and more able to seek help when they are ready.
Here are some ways to support someone you care about:
Listen fully: avoid interrupting or asking “why” questions
Believe them: take what they say seriously
Respect their choices: let them decide what to do next
Offer help: assist them in finding resources if they want it
Protect privacy: keep their experience confidential
Take care of yourself: supporting someone can be emotionally challenging
Being present, patient, and compassionate is one of the most powerful ways to help someone heal.
If you or someone you care about needs support, contact the Sojourner Crisis Line at 952-933-7422. Trained advocates are available 24/7 to listen, support and provide resources.
